Where It All Began
The love of baking was something I developed at a young age thanks to my best friend Melissa's mom. As a teenager, Melissa and I lived in the same building. So for holidays, her mom Marilyn would always invite me to their place for family dinners. I wasn't content to show up for just the meal though — being a part of the preparation was just as important.
I recall the impressive cakes — chocolate fudge and yellow cakes — which Marilyn would bake for the holidays. I envied the fact that she possessed such a skill and set out to follow in her footsteps.
The Journey
I baked everything. I made cakes, cupcakes, tarts, meringues, pies and cookies. After all, mastery requires practice. I dove completely into baking and I loved it. My mistake however was that I only saw it as a hobby. Never did I see it as a career given how much I enjoyed spending my time doing it.
For over two decades, I worked in the market research industry in various capacities. Inevitably I became dissatisfied with working in an industry which paid my bills but did nothing to stir my soul. I searched for solace and direction in life by getting into philosophy. It was in this period of my life when I came across the old saying by Marc Anthony: "If you do what you love, you never work a day in your life." And I made it my goal to embody this sentiment.
The Vision
I eventually walked away from the research industry, but I didn't leave my knowledge and understanding of what drives consumer wants, habits, and behaviour. By combining my expertise in research and my love of baking, Sweetisserie was born.
Sweetisserie (sweet + pâtisserie) puts a unique spin on every dessert on the menu. I am not motivated by sales based on volume. My focus is on creating personalized cakes and cookies which you will never be able to find anywhere else. Each item is meant to be a work of art — a Picasso, if you will. As my skill set improves daily, so does the quality, taste, and beauty of each item sold at Sweetisserie.
