My Story
From Guyana to Toronto — A Caribbean Journey
My family moved to Canada from Guyana, South America, in 1988 when I was still a child. Growing up in Toronto — a city that not only hosts the largest community of Guyanese immigrants in Canada but also has a significant Caribbean presence — I was immersed in the music, style, culture, and cuisine that my Jamaican friends and neighbours brought to everyday life.
It was at one of Toronto’s many Jamaican restaurants where I had jerk chicken for the first time, and it was love at first bite. As with any food I love, if I can enjoy it outside the home, I have to learn to make it inside my kitchen. That marked the start of my journey to create a jerk marinade versatile enough for any protein, bold enough to rival any restaurant, and simple enough to make at home.
